I got the chance today to work (....work may be a little strong for what I actually did) as a volunteer at the National Championships that were held at Ga Tech over the past couple of day. My duties as "Safety Marshal" required me to make sure that no one without credentials was able to get down on the deck area by the pool. As I took my post I was reminded of my days in the Marine Corps. General Orders were running around in my head.
"To report all violations of orders I am instructed to enforce."
"To quit my post only when properly relieved."
"To be especially watchful at night, and during the time for challenging, to challenge all persons on or near my post and to allow no one to pass without proper authority."
Hold on.....It is way too hot in here and I am way too tired and sleepy for all that nonsense. They only credentials I checked were the ones that the few people who were obviously threatened by flashy orange vest stopped and showed me.
I have never been much interested in competitive swimming, but this event was pretty damn cool. Most of the folks there were trying to get a time that would be fast enough to get them into the Olympic Trials. Others had already qualified and were using this event as a chance to test the waters mid season.
Apparently, Michael Phelps (superstar from the 2004 Games) was in one of the events. I must have been to focused on my job.....or daydreaming...to realize he was there.
Gotta go
